Enhancing and Restoring Haiti's Ecosystem
Cleaning up waste is just the start. More than 50% of the waste in Haiti is organic matter which can be composted and used to enhance Haiti's growing soil. Compost is nature's way of recycling nutrients and replenishing soil used to grow food. The soil in Haiti is susceptible to degradation and erosion due to its low moisture content coupled with effects of sporadic and heavy rainfalls, mountainous topography, and deforestation. When compost is added to soil, soil productivity increases and negative environmental impacts such as erosion decrease. Food supply becomes more viable and sustainable.
Processing Organic Waste Organic matter will be composted using a large-scale, efficient, and low maintenance system. Compost can then be added to soil to improve its nutrient levels and enhance its ability to hold moisture, resulting in more productive, fertile soil for growing.
